Joining the Club
including Membership Form and How to Pay.
Thank you for showing an interest in East Dorset Open Water Swimming Club (EDOWSC), a growing band of open water enthusiasts of varying abilities. Our members vary from some being recognised competitive swimmers and triathletes to social swimmers who enjoying swimming in relative safety with like-minded people.
The club meets at Shore Road in Poole (just east of Sandbanks) on Tuesdays (6pm for 6.15pm start) and Sundays. The first swim of the 2017 season for Club members will be on 25 April. On Tuesday nights the club arranges safety cover in the form of accompanying paddle-craft and beach walking observers.
Sunday swims are intended for Club members who are experienced open water swimmers and commence on 30 Apr 2017 (same venue, 10am for 10.15am start). There is no safety cover for the Sunday swims.
Swimmers are organised into small groups of similar abilities and operate a “buddy” scheme to offer support to each other. Each swimmer is expected to take responsibility for their own actions and to join a group suitable for their standard of swimming. Swimmers do move between groups as their experience increases.
Naturally the decision to swim is subject to weather and sea conditions.
In terms of swimming ability, the only requirement is that swimmers can swim continuously for 20 minutes in open water conditions. Don’t worry if you are not a speedy swimmer, the key thing is just to be comfortable in the water. The aim of the Club is to be inclusive. We have lots of people who just come along for a gentle cruise, but there are also some serious competitive swimmers! Everyone is welcome, you can swim as fast or as slow as you like providing you observe the instructions given in the safety briefing prior to the swim. The benefit of sea swimming is there is no ‘lane rage’ – there is plenty of room!
We ask all prospective members to attend a taster session. Taster sessions for 2017 are available on 16 May, 23 May, 6 June, 13 June, 20 June, 27 June, 4 July, 11 July, 1 August, 15 August and 5 September (unless notified otherwise). If bad weather prevents this, it will be on the next avaiilable taster date in the month. The tasters start at the same time as the club sessions.
You can book onto a taster session here (http://www.edowsc.org/ed/about/make-an-appointment). The taster sessions cost £3.00, payable at the Registration Desk, which goes towards the hire of changing facilities and the provision of a post-swim hot drink and biscuit. During the taster sessions swimmers will learn about the various safety aspects of sea swimming. The taster sessions allow prospective members to have a go at sea swimming in a more closely supervised session.
After attending a taster session prospective members are welcome to join us for up to two more swims but must then join EDOWSC to continue swimming with us, or make other arrangements for swimming without the support of the club.
EDOWSC is affiliated to Swim England and our members also need to be registered with it. We collect Swim England, SW Regional and County ASA fees for club members on their behalf and pay these over to Swim England unless applicants are already registered with and pay their affiliation fees to another club.
The total 2017 annual membership and training fee payable to EDOWSC for an Swim England Category 1 swimmer is £35 and for a Category 2 swimmer £53. Category 2 is for swimmers wishing to compete in any discipline in open competitions.
If you are already a member of another Swim England club, you only need pay £22.00 fee to join and train with EDOWSC in 2017 but you need to let us know your Swim England number.
The majority of our members are category 1 swimmers who pay £35.00 a year For £35.00 you get the chance to attend more than 40 club swims a year, with changing facilities, safety cover and free refreshments afterwards.
To join the club, you will need to download, complete and return the 2017 Membership Form with a cheque for the correct fee.
