Joining the Club
Thank you for showing an interest in the East Dorset Open Water Swimming Club (EDOWSC). The club is a growing band of open water enthusiasts of varying abilities. Our members vary from some being recognised very competitive swimmers to others who are social swimmers enjoying swimming in relative safety with like-minded people.
Prospective members are welcome to join us for a maximum of three taster swims. After that they need to decide to continue swimming with the club and join the EDOWSC, or to make other arrangements for swimming without the support of the club. We expect members to be able to swim continuously for a minimum of 30 minutes and to cover a mile (1.6 km) in not more than 45 minutes. The only cost per taster session is a £2.00 donation towards the hire of changing facilities and the provision of a post-swim hot drink and biscuit.
The benefit of swimming with the club is the support and additional safety of swimming with a group of like-minded people. The swimmers are organised into small groups of similar abilities and operate a “buddy” scheme to offer support to each other. In addition, when possible, the club arranges for safety cover in the form of accompanying kayaks and beach walking observers. Each swimmer is expected to take responsibility for their own actions and to join a group suitable for their standard of swimming. Swimmers do move between groups as their experience increases.
As the EDOWSC is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) members of the EDOWSC also need to be registered with the ASA. If you belong to another ASA affiliated swimming club then the ASA fees paid there will probably cover your admission here. In such circumstances you will only need to pay the EDOWSC fee of £10.00. Otherwise, you will need to pay your ASA and EDOWSC fees to this club as outlined on the club’s registration form.
The club website www.edowsc.org/ed offers information about the club including a calendar of events and many useful links to open water articles. Please visit the site regularly and let us know what you think.
The club meets at Shore Road in Poole (just east of Sandbanks) on Tuesdays 6.00 pm for a 6.15 pm swim. The first swim for the 2012 season is planned for 17th April. Naturally the decision to swim is subject to weather and sea conditions. Contact Gerry Griffin for further details. Sunday swims (same time and place) will recommence mid May. Please note taster sessions are only available on Tuesdays..
In order for the club to develop we need a healthy membership and to be financially secure. Consequently, your support is required so please complete and return an application form (click here for the application form) and remittance as soon as possible.
Please make your cheques payable to EDOWSC and return your form and cheque to Gerry Griffin, Membership Secretary.
