Three lifeboats and a helicopter were alerted when nine people were reported missing at 2pm on Sunday.

Emergency crews and an onshore search team spent two hours looking for the swimmers before the search was ended. By then, eight were found to have gone home and the ninth confirmed safe at 8pm.

“No-one can really prepare you for what it’s really like out there, especially when it’s lumpy and then the wind and tide turn against you and you’re already exhausted.

“Thanks to all of you for supporting us. We felt it on the day.”

Just a few short months ago, Akinwolere could hardly swim a length of a swimming pool but after being put through his paces by coach Dave Hobbs, he has just become the first person to swim across the Palau Trench, one of the deepest parts of the pacific ocean.

He did the swim as part of the BBC’s Big Splash initiative – a UK wide campaign that aims to get the nation swimming.
