In the video below, Ali Budynkiewicz and Gerry Griffin recall the Club’s magical mystery swimming tour of waterfalls, rock platforms, lagoons and wonderful shingle bays in the Isle of Purbeck on 1 August 2010.

Sunday 1 August 2010 - 10am sharp start

Waterfalls, rock platforms, lagoons and wonderful shingle bays are all on offer in this magical mystery swimming tour. This will be another first for the Club and an event you cannot afford to miss. We will be on a mission to swim in some of the most beautiful places in the Purbecks. These are iconic by nature and we are planning a route which will take you through an area of mindbending natural beauty.



Swim and Trek Day

Bob Holman is arranging a course for our own swim and trek day over in the Purbecks on Sunday 1 August 2010.

It will be from about 10am to 6pm so you will need boots, costumes, goggles and money for food and drinks at the Square and Compass.

We hope to include maybe Chapmans Pool, Winspit and Dancing Ledges - maybe as far as Lulworth, Durdle Door if we can arrange pick ups and transport.

Lido life in Cirencester is celebrated in a new exhibition of watercolours and drawings by artist Alan Brassington. Making a Splash features paintings and sketches of Cirencester’s open air swimming pool at the Dollar Street Gallery.

Swimmers in the 2010 Seahorse Swim on 27 June 2010 will not only be completing a personal challenge but also aiming to win one of four fabulous Seahorse prints by local artist Donna Stacey.

Donna has a love of studying wild life and you can see more of her artwork during Open Studio Dorset Art Weeks from 29 May to 13 June 2010 at 18 Woodlinken Close, Verwood, Dorset.

Jane Barr, Marcus English, Al Rogers and Nicola Houghton are making a film celebrating lido life in an original, new comedy ‘The Swimmer’ – a British short film packed with all the fun and eccentricities of Brits on a summer’s day.

The film follows their poor swimmer as he tries to swim a few lengths on the busiest day in summer. Swimmers out there will understand!



ROSPA call for Float First approach to prevent drowning deaths

Traditional life-saving advice for those who accidentally fall into water has been turned on its head by a team of scientists working with RoSPA.

Instead of immediately attempting to swim or wave for help, researchers at the University of Portsmouth are urging people to “float first”.

The counter-intuitive advice is being advocated after tests showed that staying as still as possible in the first few minutes after tumbling into water increases survival time by enabling air trapped in clothing to keep the head above water, protecting the airways and slowing the rate at which the body is cooled.

Thomas Noblett, of the Langdale Chase Hotel, Windermere, has been awarded the Fred Slater Trophy from the British Long Distance Swimming Association in recognition of completing 14 races over the past year, from Derwent Water to Dover Harbour. He is intent on pushing himself even further in 2010.
