What makes a good swimming recovery sandwich?

So Swimfit fell short of persuading their in-house nutrition and exercise scientist that sandwiches were a fantastic healthy snack to compliment your swimming.

But, to celebrate British Sandwich Week (15 – 21 May) they did get him to come up with a few great sandwich ideas to use as recovery food after a swim!

Eating after exercise is vital. Your body immediately needs nutrients to repair muscles and replace energy so it is recommended you refuel between 15 to 30 minutes after training.

While people have swum outside for millennia, open water swimming (the competitive and challenge orientated side of the sport) and wild swimming (the adventurous and leisure aspect) have captured public imagination over the past few years.

The launch of H2Open, the new and only magazine dedicated to open water swimming, at the Triathlon, Cycling and Running Show at Sandown Racecourse on 11 February 2011 is riding this wave.



Sport psychology survey for parents and swimmers

Swimmers and their parents are invited to participate in two surveys which will provide valuable input to ASA products and services in the area of sport psychology.

The swimmers survey will look at the ways in which parents and coaches interact with their children and athletes within swimming and the parents survey investigates attitudes and perceptions with regard to the psychological, social and emotional development of swimmers.



London Fields Lido voted most popular UK outdoor pool

A survey of 36,000 swimmers has revealed London Fields Lido in Hackney as the most popular outdoor pool in the UK. 38% of respondents to the largest-ever opinion poll of its kind (commissioned by Swimathon, the world’s biggest fundraising swim) preferred swimming outdoors.

Other pools, lidos, and wilder spots that made the top ten lists include Ponds Forge in Sheffield as the UK’s favourite place to swim, Windsor’s Dorney Lake, Crystal Palace, Manchester Aquatics Centre and Cardiff International Pool; the lidos at Tooting Bec (London) and Jesus Green (Cambridge); and Hampstead Heath Ponds, Lake Windermere and Coniston Water.



Full Moon Swim

There is nothing some outdoor swimmers like more than drifting downstream in their favourite stretch of river under a full moon.

There are obviously huge safety considerations involved in night swimming, but for those that are willing at their own risk, join in a first social swim in Dorset at Purbeck - River Frome, Wareham Quay on 19 March 2011 from 6pm to 9pm.

11 am - swim from the beach hut 2231 between Durley Chine and Bournemouth Pier.
Fancy dress is optional! Wetsuits are allowed of course.
Noon to 2pm - an eat all you can chinese buffet at the Ocean Palace Chinese Restaurant, 8 Priory Hill, Bournemouth. Club awards will be given out at the lunch.
