This is an ice swim - a swim done in water temperature less than 5C in Fraserburg, close to the town Sutherland, which is one of the coldest towns in South Africa.

East Dorset successes at UK Cold Water Swimming Championships 2011

The water temperature at Tooting Bec lido was 3C, and weather on the damp side, but that didnt stop East Dorset club members picking up a hatful of medals and having the best time - the atmosphere was fabulous.

If you want to experience British eccentricity at its very best, you have to take part next time.

The OSS December Dip - on the first Saturday of every December - is gaining something of a cult following, with 240 swimmers celebrating the start of the 2009 festive season.

It’s back for 2010, with some brilliant speakers, a hot tub, cold plunge, ginger wine & mingling, and the kind of good time you can lunch off for at least the rest of the day.

UK Cold Water Swimming Championships 2011

South London Swimming Club will be holding this biennial event which has become a must for cold water swimmers but also attracts many first time competitors. Age and ability is no barrier - with water temperatures as low as 3°C, jumping in for the 30 yard races is a challenge in itself.

There are a variety of races this year, from the traditional “head up” breaststroke, the freestyle dash and relays, to the endurance 500 yard challenge for the really fool hardy. To help competitors recover there’ll be a Finnish sauna and a hot tub available after the races as well as a host of stalls and entertainment going on throughout the day.

The 2010 World Winter Swimming Championships

Video highlights of 700 competitors from 20 countries including Finland, Russia, UK and Nigeria who entered this year’s event held in Lake Bled, Slovenia. The competition included 25 metres breaststroke, 25 and 50m freestyle, relays and the creme de la creme of winter swimming, the 450 m Endurance race.
