With immense sadness, FINA and the worldwide aquatic community are mourning the loss of open water swimmer Fran Crippen (USA), who passed away after falling unconscious during the last leg of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup, held in Fujairah (UAE), on 23 October 2010.

Grimaldi wins 10km FINA Open Water World Championships 2010

Saturday 17 July 2010 – Lac-St-Jean, Roberval

38 athletes started the women’s 10km event in bright sunshine with a gentle breeze on the placid surface on Lac-St-Jean, defying the forecast of rain and thunderstorms. However a photo finish and several disqualifications meant the official results took longer than the 2:05.45.20 time it took for Italian Martina Grimaldi to win the event.

British Open Water Swimming Team for the 2010 World Championships

The British Open Water Swimming Team, powered by British Gas, are preparing to take on the World’s elite at the World Championships which take place in Roberval, Canada.

World Champion Keri-Anne Payne will lead the four-strong team into action as the Brits look to continue their dominance of the sport.

Olympic silver medallist Payne will be joined by Olympic bronze medallist Cassie Patten and LEN Open Water Cup winner Daniel Fogg and young talent Tom Allen.

FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix 2010 Mexico

17 April 2010 – Sumidero Canyon

Petar Stoychev of Bulgaria won the 15 Km race for the fourth year in a row (3:19:52). Diego Nogueira of Spain was second in 3:20:16 and team mate Francisco Hervas third in 3:20:27.

Tilar Gvijo led Argentina to a 1-2 finish in the women’s race, clocking 3:35:27, with Antonnela Bogarin second in 3:35:35 and Marta Recio of Spain third at 3:35:39.

FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup 2010, Santos

Regardless of who leads the race it all comes down to the speed of the swimmer in the final 200m of the 10km Marathon Swim. Coaches at the recent FINA MSWC event in Santos, Brazil said there are two key elements when identifying the potential open water swimmer: 1. Speed and 2. Mindset.

FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup Dubai

17 October 2009 – Mamzar Beach, Dubai

Germany’s Thomas Lurz and Brazil’s Poliana Okimoto dominated the penultimate leg of the series which moves to Sharjah on 21 October.

Lurz, a gold medal winner at 5km and 10km in Rome, outpaced his 34 competitors to record his ninth victory of the series in which he has an unassailable lead. Russian Vladimir Dyachin was second and winner of the Great East Swim, Thomas Allen (ITC Swansea, Great Britain), third.

FINA Open Water World Cup in Dubai and Shahjah

A 10-strong British Gas squad has been selected to take part in the 11th and 12th FINA Open Water World Cup events in Dubai and Shahjah on 17th and 21st October.

Olympic bronze medallist Joanne Jackson and World bronze medallist Caitlin McClatchey, who competed in the British Gas Great North Swim earlier this year, will take part in their first 10km open water race in Dubai as they take on world class open water athletes.

Lurz and Okimoto win in China

The FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2009 has moved on to Asia, where China recently staged the eighth and ninth of twelve races in this year’s series. The big 10km winners continue to be world champion Thomas Lurz (GER) and Poliana Okimoto (BRA) who triumphed in races on 26 September 2009 in Shantou and 20 September 2009 in An Chun. Lurz has now taken seven gold medals on the circuit, which he aims to win, while Okimoto has picked up six gold and two silver medals.
