David Davies re-focuses Olympic campaign

Olympic silver medallist David Davies has announced that he is to switch his Olympic preparation to Wales in his bid for glory in London.

The Barry-born athlete moved to Loughborough in 2007 and has now decided to return to the City of Cardiff, a club that took him from the ages of 7 to 22. Davies will now rejoin his childhood coach Dave Haller.

“I have found this year tough in terms of my performance both in competitions and in training and I knew that I needed to make a change,” Davies said.

London 2012 Invitation to tender: Boats and Marine Services

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has begun the process of sourcing over 180 support boats (non-competition) for the Sailing, Rowing, Canoeing, Triathlon and Open water swim events to be staged in the summer of 2012.

Over the course of March 2010, LOCOG is seeking to engage three different marine market sectors. The three separate opportunities will cover the commercial charter of Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) and motor yachts, the purchase of RIBs and other boats direct from the manufacturers and the sourcing of outboard motors direct from the marine engine manufacturers.

1000 day countdown to London 2012

With Saturday 31 October 2009 marking 1,000 days to go until London hosts the 2012 Olympic Games, the stars of British aquatics are counting down the days until they compete in front of their home crowd in what is likely to be the biggest competition of their lives.

Cassie Patten, Olympic bronze medallist in open water, is looking forward to experiencing the support of the home crowd in London. The Stockport-based swimmer went to Beijing as a first time Olympian and took away a wealth of experience that she will use in 2012.

USA Swimming Open Water National Championships 2009 – 5km

Chloe Sutton (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won the women’s 5km National Championships. While the pack of swimmers headed for the feeding station on the first half of the two-lap course, 2008 Olympian Sutton bypassed the hydration and headed for the first turn. From there she increased her lead, and finished nearly 30 seconds ahead of the field in 59:29.

Olympic results help to shape future of Open Water

Britain’s medal-winning performances and dominance of the marathon swimming events at the Beijing Games has kick-started a wave of interest in the newest sport to be included in the Olympic programme.

The subsequent enthusiasm and support shown towards open water, from those within swimming as well as the public at large, is something British Swimming Open Water Performance Manager Mark Perry believes will be a major factor in its continued success.
