Be part of the Swimming Trust’s 2011 Great North Swim team

The Swimming Trust still has guaranteed places available for this year’s iconic Great North Swim.

The swim, which takes place over a 1 mile course in the beautiful Lake Windermere in Cumbria over the weekend of 18 & 19 June 2011, is open to anyone over 16 years of age on the day of the event.

Each Swimming Trust place costs £37.00 and you will need to agree to raise at least £150 for the charity.

The UK’s most popular outdoor swim, The British Gas Great North Swim, is moving to a new early summer date. Entry will firstly be offered to entrants who deferred from the cancelled 2010 GNS by way of an email reminder.

General entries will open before the end of January.

Following the postponement of the British Gas Great North Swim at the weekend, the organisers are extremely disappointed that it will not be possible to stage the event in 2010.

They had hoped to stage the event this weekend but there are signs posted up by the Environment Agency, South Lakeland District Council and the Health Protection Agency at various locations on the shores of Windermere warning of toxic algae and therefore reluctantly been left with no choice but to cancel the event.



British Gas Great North Swim 2010 postponed

The British Gas Great North Swim, which was due to be staged on 4/5 September 2010 at Windermere has been postponed.

“This is due to prevalence of blue-green algae and the impact that this may have on your safety in the water. This decision was taken by the Event Safety Group in the interests of safety of swimmers after further stringent water quality checks were completed.”



Record numbers enter 2010 British Gas Great North Swim

The 2010 British Gas Great North Swim in Windemere will feature a record-breaking 9,000 athletes after a 50 per cent rise in participation.

The event – which attracted 2,000 swimmers when it was launched two years ago – sold out their allocation for the 500m, one-mile and two-mile swims in just six weeks.

In addition, the fields for the elite races are as strong as ever with Olympic medallists Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten headlining the women’s competition and Olympic bronze medallist Thomas Lurz in the men’s.

Over a thousand swimmers took the plunge in London’s Royal Victoria Dock to swim alongside a world class elite field of Olympic athletes. Hundreds of mass swimmers attempted to swim a mile in Srathclyde Loch. 6000 navigated the beautiful waters of the Lake Windermere and the final Great Swims in 2009 took place at Alton Water in Suffolk.

Despite the big freeze gripping the nation, prospective swimmers were undeterred, with entries peaking in the first week in January and many making the challenge of Great Swim their New Year’s resolution for 2010.

Almost all the places on the Great North Swim 2010 have been snapped up, only six weeks since it opened for entries.

More than 7,000 people have signed up for the event at Lake Windermere in September. Only a limited number of charity places are now available. Now in its third year, the swim in Cumbria raises money for charities and provides a boost to the local economy.
