Nadine Pastor and Danill Serebrennikov win Great North Swim 2009

12/13 September 2009 – Windermere

Britain’s Tom Allen powered through the elite field to take bronze (16m26s) in a nail-biting race for the finish with Russia’s Danill Serebrennikov taking gold (16m23s) with Germany’s Alexander Studzinski (16m23s) coming a close second just split-seconds later. Germany’s Nadine Pastor claimed victory in the women’s elite event through a stunning performance to complete the one-mile open water course in 18m 14s ahead of promising GB junior Katy Whitfield (18m15s) and Larisa Ilchenko (18m16s).

Compete against Olympians in the Great Swim Challenge

World Champion Gold medallist Keri-Anne Payne, Olympic Silver medallist David Davies and Olympic Bronze medallist Cassie Patten are just a few of the great athletes launching the Great Swim 2009, by participating in the Great London Swim.

The Great Swim involves a new series of one mile swims taking place throughout the country, the first kicking off in London, at the Royal Victoria Dock on Saturday 15 August 2009, giving swimmers the opportunity to swim against the outstanding backdrop of Canary Wharf and The O2 arena.

Great North Swim fast approaching limit of entries

Less than two weeks after the Great North Swim opened for entries, the first day of the event is closed with a maximum of 2,500 swimmers – and the second day is quickly reaching its limit.

The Great North Swim plans to set off a total of 5,000 swimmers over a two-day period in waves of 250 people. Colin Hill, the Event Director said, “The Great North Swim’s success is down to its stunning location, world class elite field, overwhelming support from spectators and the enthusiasm of thousands of swimmers.”

Great North Swim 2009

Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2009 – Low Wood Hotel and Marina on the shores of Lake Windermere.

The one mile open water mass participation swim will feature some of the world’s best open water swimmers. Entry fee £30, minimum age 15 years. You can also take take part in this challenge with the difference and support the British Red Cross by participating.

Watch the Great North Swim 2008

Don’t miss out on your chance to watch Olympic medallists David Davies and Cassie Patten swim to victory in the inaugural Great North Swim, when the race is broadcast on 14 December 2008.

The swim, which attracted over 2,200 swimmers of all ages and abilities, will be repeated on Channel 4 at 8.00am.
