Chagford Swimming Pool

| My comment: We set out for Chagford but find that we are on a different road heading southwest to the centre of Dartmoor. However, we find a sign to Chagford off to the right and drive through very narrow Devon lanes to find the village nestled in a valley. Very beautiful, must come back here again sometime. After several enquiries we find the pool set by the river in wonderful Devon countryside. We explain our mission to Pam at the reception kiosk and she tells us to go to see Sue who was lifeguarding and was the chairman of the trust that ran the pool. Pam had been helping at the pool for 30 years and her father helped build it in 1934. It had a mud bottom then and although it is now fully chlorinated, it is still filled by river water and solar power heated. We had speculated what RH meant in Liquid Assets. The pool itself was wonderful and 35 metres long with 25 metres roped off. The water actually tasted like river water which was very pleasant. We swam our 64 lengths turning at the rope each time. When we got out there was nice cup of coffee and tea waiting for us. Sue had organised a collection and good donation was added to our Save the Children fund. She wanted to be kept informed of our progress and was very encouraging. We have met some really nice people on our journey so far. A great end to the day! |
