Abbey Fit School Open Air Pool, Addlestone
![]() Abbey Fit Leisure Centre opened in the mid 1980s and is a dual-use facility with Jubilee High School The School Governors and Runnymede Borough Council Leisure Officers came to the conclusion that unless major investment took place (in the region of £750,000 - £1.5 million), it would be better to close the pool, initially for 12 months while suitable contractors and funding could be sourced for refurbishment and upgrading. This was formally agreed at a meeting of the Addlestone Leisure Centre Joint Management Committee in October 2007. |
| My comment: At reception, Dave explains our aim to swim a mile in every UK lido for Save the Children. Reception lady has to speak to her manager and comes back flustered “No, she wasn’t to sign anything” (we only need verification we had swum in the pool!). Could we pay and go in? “Ho, I don’t know, it is very busy in there, we have 16 swimmers!”. We had of course looked over the fence and were able to reassure her that we would cause no trouble. The manager soon arrived and let us in. The lifeguard had been on duty since 11am and was to continue until 5pm. This says it all about the pool management. Complete swim and enjoy tea, sandwiches and a muffin. |
